Nacro and St Mungo's are the UK's joint top voluntary sector employers for gay people, according to Stonewall's 2006 Workplace Equality Index of the top 100 gay-friendly employers.

The index lists the two charities in joint 24th place. Six charities made the top-100 list, although 12 submitted entries.

Barnardo's, ranked at number 20 last year, drops 26 places in the 2006 index.

Citizens Advice (62), Arts Council England (91), and Leonard Cheshire (96) are the only other charities to make the list.

Employers are ranked according to 20 criteria, including whether they have an openly gay member on their board or senior management team, offer partnership benefits to same-sex couples or advertise job vacancies in the gay media.
