Careers: Job Ladder - Robin Boles, chief executive, In Kind Direct
Third Sector, 22 September 2004
What was your first job? I was working as a lawyer for what is now called Ernst and Young.
What were your two key career moves? Moving to London from the US 22 years ago to run the operations of the Investors' Compensation Scheme, which pays out compensation to people who have lost money due to fraud or negligence. Jumping sectors to start up In Kind Direct was my boldest move, and an opportunity to bring together my energy, experience and values with the Prince of Wales's vision.
Why do you think you got your present job? The cumulative experience from all my previous jobs: business competence, people skills, passion, drive and doing in-depth homework as preparation for the interviews.
Who or what has been your biggest influence? My parents instilled in me the importance of doing my very best in whatever I undertake and to always treat everyone with courtesy.
What was the best moment of your career? Hearing out of the blue in 2002, that research by Caritas had identified In Kind Direct as the fastest growing charity in the UK. More charities getting more goods to use in their operations or give to their clients is very satisfying indeed.
... and your worst moment? Agreeing to sell a business I had started to a US company, but then having to accept this would mean giving up a job I loved because I didn't want to move back to the States.
What's your tip for success? Work really hard to get where you want to go, and make sure you take the time to treat people you meet along the way in a manner that would make your mother proud of you.
How do you relax? My work is quite intense so I try to get away every six weeks for a weekend. I enjoy reading, cooking, family holidays and researching the stock market.
