Olympic bids 'how to' from Office of Third Sector
By Paul Jump, Third Sector Online, 28 September 2007
The Office of the Third Sector is funding a three-year project to help social enterprises bid successfully for contracts related to the London 2012 Olympics.
The £267,000 project, which will be run by umbrella organisation Social Enterprise London in partnership with the Social Enterprise Coalition, will involve a series of events across the UK designed to give social enterprises opportunities to build up consortia and share best practice. It will also run some events specifically for BME entrepreneurs.
Social Enterprise London will also meet regularly with procurement agencies to bring what it calls “dramatic change” to their policies and convince them of the added value provided by social enterprises. This initiative will be supported by detailed measurement of the impact of two social enterprises, yet to be established, that are actively pursuing Olympic contracts.
The umbrella groups will also launch an online hub containing information about tendering relevant to social enterprises, as well as a forum on which they will be able to provide feedback on the procurement processes to policy makers.
Earlier this year, research from Social Enterprise London showed that social enterprises could deliver Olympic contracts to a value of up £500m. Chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “We know that social enterprises can deliver at the highest level; it is fantastic to be able to give them a platform to demonstrate this, and to fully engage with the 2012 agenda.”
