Volunteers want a one-stop shop

By Indira Das-Gupta, Third Sector, 14 November 2007

Charities would be more effective at recruiting young volunteers if they all used a one-stop shop to advertise opportunities, according to Terry Ryall, chief executive of youth volunteering charity v.

Ryall was commenting on research by its forerunner, the Russell Commission, that concluded the sector should operate in a way volunteers wanted. This conflicted with the preference of some charities to work alone when recruiting volunteers, Ryall told Third Sector.

"Young people want a one-stop shop where they can find information for all different types of volunteering," she said. "But most organisations want their own websites and recruiting drives. We're experiencing some difficulties with that."

Moira Swinbank, chief executive of TimeBank UK, which matches people with volunteering opportunities, said: "It's important for any organisation to consider what volunteers need."

Volunteer Centres nationally are already providing information for all types of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Some Volunteer Centres also were hosts to to Millenium Volunteers Project workers ( now called V Involved) Therefore I would argue that the onestop shop is already here

As a newly -fledged apprentice (events technician!), launching in to the world of work has been a strange new place for me at this point of my life; not unlike many people in this day and age i guess!

Universally speaking, as we stand on the brink of our own social revolution i imagine that it would indeed be in the interest of both the underprivaledged and the willing if spoken charities were to be pulled together.. although agreeably "volunteer job shops" could't be that far off... could they? Personally; i think that voluntary work should become an essential part of life- everywhere!

Volunteer Centres up and down the country provide a one-stop shop! The majority of us broker volunteering opportunities for all potential volunteers not just young people and have many satisfied customers. Organisations seeking volunteers promote their opportunities through us and we support volunteers in finding the right role.
