Charity merger register launched
By Emilie Filou, Third Sector Online, 28 November 2007
The new Register of Mergers will be launched tomorrow on the Charity Commission's website.
The online register, which is part of the second commencement order of the 2006 Charities Act, will allow many charities that have merged to wind up their old entities without fear of forfeiting future legacies. Gifts and legacies will automatically be transferred from old charities to their successor organisations.
The online resource will show the names and registered numbers of the merging charities, the date the merger was registered with the commission, the dates when any properties were transferred and the details of any vesting declaration made in connection with the merger.
Registrations will be allowed from tomorrow onwards. Both the register and the forms through which to apply for registration are available from the commission’s website under ‘Promoting effective performance’ and ‘Mergers and collaborative working’.
