BME social enterprise network proposed
By Ben Cook, Third Sector Online, 29 November 2007
The Social Enterprise Coalition plans to establish a network for social enterprises working with people from black and minority ethnic groups to help them have a bigger say in policy development.
The coalition staged a consultation event for BME enterprises yesterday at Regent’s College in London in order to identify potential members of the network.
Tamina Mir, development manager, BME networks, at the Social Enterprise Coalition, said the aim of the network would be to give BME social enterprises a voice because they were “not at the forefront of the agenda”.
She added that it was also hoped that the network would influence policy development and lead to “more BME social enterprises on the board of the coalition”.
Mir said she hoped the network would encourage the establishment of more BME social enterprises and raise awareness of social enterprise as a career option.
The proposal for a network – which would focus solely on social enterprise – comes after the launch of Voice4Change England last month. Voice4Change promotes BME third sector organisations, particularly in relation to their role in civil society.
