The British Heart Foundation stands to receive a donation of nearly £2m from HBOS after being chosen as the banking group’s charity of the year in 2007.

WRVS and a partnership between the Family Holiday Association and the RNLI, which were also shortlisted by the group, will each receive an £800,000 share of the £3.6m total raised by HBOS staff, customers and shareholders.

The £1.8m donation to the BHF will be the single biggest donation the charity has received from a corporate partner. Peter Hollins, its chief executive, said the money would be used to recruit 15 new nurses to support heart patients and their families. “That's an extra 75,000 nursing hours,” he said.

In January 2007, HBOS – which includes the Halifax and Bank of Scotland – chose the BHF as the recipient of its challenge to raise £1m. That figure was passed in May, with the further £2.4m raised shared equally between the three shortlisted charities. The amount raised by fundraising activities was matched by the banking group.

This year’s charity of the year will be chosen on 16 January.
