Dogs to appear on stamps

Dog stamps: mark centenary

The Royal Mail is to issue a series of stamps depicting dogs that help people with disabilities.

The collection of six designs marks the centenary of the first police dogs used in the UK and the launch of Year of the Assistance Dog. The themed year is being run jointly by the five members of Assistance Dogs UK, the umbrella organisation for the registered charities training dogs for disabled people: Canine Partners, Dogs for the Disabled, Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Support Dogs.

The coalition’s members will be holding a range of events and activities in 2008 to highlight the impact of working dogs, campaign for consistent access to services and raise awareness of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Alan Brooks, chairman of Assistance Dogs UK, said: “We are delighted that Royal Mail has produced this beautiful collection of stamps and hope that it will help to raise awareness of the impact that guide and other assistance dogs have on the lives of disabled people.”

Julietta Edgar, head of special stamps at the Royal Mail, said: “It’s easy to forget that there’s a ‘secret army’ of thousands of hardworking dogs who make a real difference to many lives.”

The stamps will be available between February 5 and 28 at post offices and online at www.royalmail.com/stamps.
