Civil society in rude health with an income of £109bn, says NCVO

Civil society in the UK generates £109bn a year, making it bigger than either the electricity, gas and water industries combined or the hotel and restaurant sector, according to the NCVO.

The umbrella organisation calculated the figure for the first time for The UK Civil Society Almanac 2008, which is published today. Previous almanacs analysed only charities, but this year's edition includes social enterprises, independent schools, universities, cooperatives, trade unions, political parties and housing associations to encompass all of civil society...
