Mencap rebrands housing division to reflect changes

Mencap has changed the name of its Housing and Support Division to Personal Support and Housing Division to reflect its modernisation and changing style of service.

The division will continue to support people with learning disabilities by moving most of its services out of residential care homes and into more flexible independent accommodation.

The department was originally set up set up to offer an alterative to hospital accommodation. Since 2001, the percentage of the charity’s beneficiaries in residential care homes has fallen from 75 per cent to below 35 per cent.

“Standard housing and residential care is no longer always the right solution and our division has changed to support a whole range of alternative housing solutions,” said Jan Tregelles, director of personal support and housing at the charity.

“Our new name reflects these changes, but also indicates how we will put the choices and needs of every individual service user with a learning disability at the centre of where and how they live.”
