Applications for Welsh fund leap after £1m injection

The Wales Council for Voluntary Action received the same number of applications for a community grants fund in a month as it usually does in a year after the Welsh Assembly Government announced an extra £1m in funding last December.
The Communities First Trust Fund, which has been running since 2002, was established to give small grants to community groups with a minimum of delay and red tape. The WCVA, which administers the fund, received more than 1,000 applications in the four weeks before February’s closing date, more than 900 of them in the last fortnight.
“This compares with an average of 100 a month over the past year,” said Tessa White, grants manager at the WCVA.
More than 1,400 grants, totalling £3.9m, were distributed in the last financial year. Next year’s budget is £3.2m.
