MPs rally against plan to end water rates relief
By David Ainsworth, Third Sector Online, 25 April 2008
Plans to stop charities getting relief from water rates have been criticised in the House of Commons.
Five MPs have signed an early day motion expressing concern about the “disproportionate financial burden” that the change to water billing will place on charitable organisations when the new rules come into force from 2010.
The five MPs are: Sir Nicholas Winterton, Conservative MP for Macclesfield; Ann Winterton, Conservative MP for Congleton in Cheshire; Ann Cryer, Labour MP for Keighley, West Yorkshire; Bob Spink, Independent Conservative MP for Castle Point in Essex; and Mike Hancock, Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South. They said they were disappointed that the changes were being introduced with the agreement of Ofwat – the regulator of water and sewerage providers in England and Wales – and the Consumer Council for Water.
They called on the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to review the decision.
