NCVO begins Compact consultation

By John Plummer, Third Sector Online, 4 August 2008

Umbrella body the NCVO has begun consulting its members on the future of the Compact.

Last month, the Office of the Third Sector asked the Commission for the Compact to begin a consultation on how the Compact should evolve (Third Sector Online, 8 July).

The NCVO consultation will focus particularly on whether the Compact, a voluntary agreement that outlines how the public and voluntary sectors should behave towards each other, should be reinforced with statutory powers.

The NCVO will submit its view at the end of October after canvassing members for their opinions.

It has posted a background briefing on its website as well as a questionnaire asking members how useful their local Compacts are and what they think could be done to improve them.

"There has been a lot of discussion about whether the Compact has been as successful as was originally hoped, and what can be done to strengthen it," said Ann Blackmore, head of policy at the NCVO.

"We want to ensure that as those discussions progress they take full account of the experiences and views of voluntary and community organisations on the ground."
