Brennan appointed as voluntary sector minister
By Ben Cook, Third Sector Online, 6 October 2008
Kevin Brennan, MP for Cardiff West, has been appointed the new Minister for the Third Sector.
Brennan was formerly a parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Children, Schools and Families. He replaces Phil Hope, who has been promoted to minister of state at the Department of Health.
Brennan's responsibilities at the DCSF included the third sector, child protection, children in care, asylum-seeking children, school food and youth sport.
A teacher by profession, 49-year-old Brennan was formerly a member of the House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee.
He was first elected as MP for Cardiff West in June 2001. He is also a member of parliamentary rock band MP4.
Last week, Liam Byrne was appointed as the new Cabinet Office minister to replace Ed Miliband, who has been appointed Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

We must hope that Kevin Brennan will recognise the value of investing in 'tried and tested' local Third Sector providers and neighbourhood-based consortia - and will not be inclined to rush into 'quick fix' partnerships with the growing number of transnational corporates now targeting lucrative commissions! One size does not fit all - and creative solutions must be locally-tailored to be effective.Wendy Butler (North Devon Voluntary Services)
