Charity and social enterprise very different, says Hurd

Grouping social enterprises and charities together is not always helpful for either, new shadow charities minister Nick Hurd has said.

Speaking at Social Enterprise London's autumn conference, Hurd, who was appointed the Conservative spokesman for charities, social enterprise and volunteering in a reshuffle earlier this month, said there were "very strong" distinctions between charities and social enterprise.

He told the conference that a future Conservative government could conduct a review into how social enterprise sits alongside the voluntary sector and how to ensure the specific needs of social enterprises were met.

Hurd also urged social enterprises to work with Conservative local authorities to deliver public services.

"If local government, which is largely in Conservative hands, really grasped the opportunities, we could make an even greater impact," said Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Social Enterprise London.
