Woolworths' charity to continue with new name

Woolworths Kids First will carry on for at least four months, despite retailer's collapse

Troubled retailer Woolworths' charitable arm is to continue operating under a new name.

Woolworths Kids First
has raised a total of £6.9m for 6,000 causes since it was established in 1999. It supports fundraising for children's projects chosen by staff in local branches.

"We are going to move away from Woolworths and stand alone," said Jodi Saul, chief executive of Woolworths Kids First. "We cannot rely on someone coming in and taking over the business."

The organisation, which employs three staff, is to be renamed the Kids First Trust. Saul said it had enough funds to survive for between four and six months, after which it will re-evaluate its position.

Last week administrators ruled that charity money collected by local branches will be transferred to the charity's accounts. The money had been frozen for a fortnight after the company went into administration.

‘With the charity almost a decade old, it is only right that the team and I do everything in our power to keep this organisation going," said Saul.

"We are keeping in touch with all our supporters through Facebook in the short term."
