County Council provides extra cash to train more volunteer advisers as recession bites

Citizens Advice Bureau branches in Nottinghamshire have been granted an extra £137,400 by Nottinghamshire County Council to help deal with an increasing number of requests for help.

In the past six months, the seven county branches have seen a 52 per cent increase in requests for help from people who have been made redundant and a 47 per cent increase in the number of people coming to them with mortgage and secured loan problems.

The extra funding, confirmed at a council meeting yesterday, comes on top of the existing £287,000 they get from the local authority. It will be spent on training more than 2,500 new volunteer advisers.

A spokesman for the county council said it would review the extra funding later this year and might provide additional funds to CAB branches if it proved necessary.
