Advocacy Partners in merger talks with Speaking Up

By Christina Farr, Third Sector Online, 3 July 2009

Two organisations 'have almost identical missions'

Advocacy organisations Advocacy Partners and Speaking Up are in merger talks. The two organisations are carrying out due diligence examinations and will make a final decision on whether to merge by the end of September.

A joint statement said talks began when the charities realised their missions were almost identical.

Carla Manning, head of marketing at Speaking Up, which employs 143 staff, said the move was not a result of any financial difficulty at either charity. "Both charities are in strong positions," she said.

Manning said she did not envisage any job losses as part of the proposed merger, but staffing levels and locations would be discussed.

Jonathan Senker, chief executive at Advocacy Partners, which has about 40 staff, said: "Enabling people to have rights that are respected and voices that count is at the core of both organisations. We believe that by combining the two organisations’ expertise and resources we may each be able to offer even more in the future."

The two organisations said if they decide to merge, the new structure could be in place by the middle of 2010.
