Average donations on Virgin Money Giving rose in June

Charity giving holding up well, claims company
The average value of donations made on the Virgin Money Giving donation website rose in June, having fallen every month this year except March, when the site was boosted by sponsorship from the Virgin London Marathon.
Figures from Virgin Money Giving, which do not include the value of Gift Aid, show the average donation in June was £31.24. The average in May was £29.29 and was £30.59 in April. In March, the only other month this year in which the average has risen, the average was £31.73.
The highest average donation level since October, when the site was launched to fundraisers, was in December, when the figure was worth £35.69. The figure fell to £31.20 in January and £31 in February.
Jo Barnett, executive director of Virgin Money Giving, said the rise in June suggested charitable giving was holding up, despite fears of tax rises, unemployment and public sector spending cuts.
"The current state of the economy means something’s got to give, but so far charity giving is holding up well," she said. "People are remaining generous."
The figures also show more than £5m was donated on Virgin Money Giving in April, during the lead-up to the marathon, but £1.5m of this was donated to non-marathon related events.
Third Sector reported in April that more than £19.5m had been donated on rival donations site JustGiving to support London Marathon runners.
