Korea looks to UK for social enterprise advice

Social Enterprise London is helping the Korean government to review its social enterprise policy.

The membership body is hosting Korean government official Wangoo Kang, who has worked for the Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance since 1993, during a visit to the UK to research the social enterprise sector here.

“Here in the UK, social enterprise is very diverse and plays a very important role tackling the inequality and deprivation in this country,” Kang said. “I am impressed by the role social enterprises play and how they benefit communities, and would like to learn how we can adapt to be more effective.”

Kang said he was particularly interested in how to make social enterprises financially sustainable and how to evaluate their ongoing impact.

Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Social Enterprise London, said: “It has been fascinating to learn more about the culture of social enterprise in Korea, and it’s a remarkable achievement that the British model for social enterprise is inspiring others throughout the world.”
