This year's BBC Children in Need telethon raised £20.3m last Friday night.

The total is short of last year's record of £20.9m.

Almost half of this year's figure, £9.1m, was raised in online donations, and the remainder was taken from more than 210,000 phone calls. At peak times, more than 58 calls per second were being made to the charity's phone line.

BBC Children in Need is still counting donations from members of the public who have held fundraising events and is expected to release a final figure in the next three or four months.

This year's appeal was the 30th BBC Children in Need telethon. Its host, Terry Wogan, said: "This year we surpassed all expectations with the amount raised and I am in awe that in these tough times, the British public has shown such tremendous support and generosity."
