Northern Rock Foundation pledges £2.2m to north-east groups

Months after its future was threatened by the financial crisis at the Northern Rock bank, the foundation has awarded grants to charities and cultural groups in Cumbria and the north east of England.

The foundation has pledged to give cash to 25 charities and cultural groups, with most of the funding being set aside to help disadvantaged people in the region.

Grant recipients include youth projects across the north east that provide training for young people and prevent re-offending.

The funding is part of £11m that the foundation will hand out in this financial year.

Alistair Balls, chair of the foundation, said: "We invest our funds in organisations whose expertise and hard work makes a huge difference."
