Novel approach

Children from Blairdardie Primary School in Glasgow were among the first to benefit from free books under the National Literacy Trust's joint Book Drop initiative with coffee chain Starbucks. Local Starbucks manager Charles McDonald dished out dozens of books last week from the 13,000 collected around the UK, after Starbucks' customers donated new books to outlets over Christmas. "One of the most effective ways to nurture a child's love of reading is to give them access to a rich variety of books," said Neil McClelland, director of the trust. "The Book Drop initiative is a great example of Starbucks engaging with local communities to deliver this opportunity."
