NSPCC initiative to protect witnesses

The NSPCC, the Bar Council and the Crown Prosecution Service are to set up a training initiative to protect young witnesses.

The charity has helped to produce a video aimed at lawyers, which highlights the special measures to protect vulnerable witnesses that are outlined in part II of the 1999 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act.

The video uses three dramatised scenarios to show how a better understanding of witnesses' capabilities and circumstances can help them cope with the proceedings, as well as secure the best evidence.
