Youth at Risk delivers social intervention programmes for society's most disadvantaged, difficult and damaged young people.

Total income: £1.34m for the year ending 30 June 2007, compared with £856,000 for the previous 12 months.

Highest salary: One employee was paid between £70,000 and £80,000.

Reserves policy: At the end of the previous financial year, the charity had a small deficit and set a target of turning this into a modest fund balance by the end of 2006/07. It achieved this, turning a deficit of £46,000 into a positive balance of £57,000. Its target is to reach reserves equivalent to three months' fixed costs by the end of 2008/09, equal to £200,000.

Fundraising costs: The charity spent £8,000 on fundraising, which totalled £390,000. This gave the charity a fundraising ratio of 2p in the pound. The previous year's ratio was 3p in the pound.

Pension: The charity operates a defined-contribution scheme, to which it contributes 4 per cent of salary.

How performance is communicated: The charity has made an attempt to tackle the challenge of demonstrating its effectiveness. Its website ( contains a 'reference library' section that includes reports on a handful of projects. The trustees' report and accounts, also available on the website, give details about the charity's objectives for the year and its achievements. The site also gives information about the charity's aspiration to continue improving its evaluation and monitoring.

The charity says: "The year saw growth in most of our programme areas, such as a three-year employment programme with Liverpool City Council. We were also involved in our greatest project to date, in which more than 150 young people engaged with the discipline of classical ballet in our Ballet Hoo/Leaps and Bounds project. This was documented in an acclaimed Channel 4 series called Ballet Changed My Life."
