Politics: Lobby briefing - Tom Levitt, Labour MP for High Peak

What is the All-Party Parliamentary Group you chair looking at?

Local government minister Phil Woolas will talk to my community and voluntary sector group about the local government white paper - or the communities paper as it may be called. We'll also be talking to the new chair of the Charity Commission, Dame Suzi Leather, and we've invited Compact Commissioner John Stoker to speak to us.

And in the new year?

Christopher Spence from Volunteering England will talk about the commission on the future of volunteering. Towards Easter, Ed Miliband will come back to tell us what he's done since becoming third sector minister.

Should there be a wholesale shift of public services to the charity sector?

A wholesale shift, no. I look to the sector to bring new ideas and ways of delivering services, rather than transferring services from one sector to another. It's about complementing public services and adding qualities that bigger organisations running public services sometimes can't achieve.

Will anything come of this agenda?

I think it will happen, but I want it to happen organically rather than specifying there has to be a shift. Equally, it's absolutely essential the sector isn't regarded as a cheap service provider.
