Re-use charity is free to Womble

A charity that gives unwanted household goods to the poor has been granted the right to use the Womble name for a new national fundraising day.

The Furniture Re-Use Network will stage the Big Womble on 29 October.

The Wombles were, according to the theme song to their television show, famous for "making good use of the things that we find". The charity aims to do the same by raffling or auctioning household goods donated by celebrities on the day in Wimbledon, home of the TV characters.

The network will sell raffle tickets through its member organisations, which will take a share of the profits.

The umbrella body hopes to raise £250,000, which will be spent on families in need of household furniture.

If successful the network could make the Big Womble an annual event.

Re-use charities that would like to get involved should contact pauls@frn.org.uk.
