Relate North London goes into liquidation

Seventeen job losses at relationship counselling charity

Seventeen staff at a London branch of Relate have lost their jobs after it went into liquidation.

Relate North London, which had about 35 staff, was wound up at a creditors' meeting this week. The charity's work was taken over by two neighbouring organisations, Relate North East London and Relate London North West.

They have offered jobs to front-line staff affected by the closure. However, administrative employees have been left out of work.

"Levels of demand for the service have been affected by the recession," said Lane Bednash, acting chair of Relate North London until its closure.

Relate North London is part of a federation of 78 independent charities that provide relationship counselling.

A spokeswoman for Relate's national body said Relate North London was the first to close for "a few years".

She added: "There is no reason to think that others will follow because they all have different business models."
