Drugs charity Release has been offered free advertising on London buses after having an advertising campaign removed from them earlier this week.

The charity's posters, which bore the slogan "Nice people take drugs", were removed after it was told they were likely to attract complaints.

Transport advertising company CBS Outdoor has said the charity can have at least four weeks' coverage on London buses in July providing it comes up with a new slogan.

The original adverts were displayed on buses to stimulate "a realistic and honest debate" about drugs. But CBS Outdoor removed them after the Committee of Advertising Practice warned that if members of the public complained about the adverts, the Advertising Standards Authority would be likely to uphold the complaints.

A Release spokeswoman said the charity was saddened by the decision to remove the original campaign and that it would not follow the suggestion by CBS to change the slogan to "Nice people take drugs too".

"We would like a public apology from CBS," she said. "We're a small charity and we can't afford to run campaigns like this all the time, so it was a significant investment for us.

"The campaign aimed to break down the stigma about using drugs and to spark a sophisticated debate, and our new slogan will reflect this," she added.
