Richard Hawkes will be Scope's new chief executive

VSO director will take up role in January 2010

Disability charity Scope has appointed Richard Hawkes, international programmes director at development charity VSO, as its new chief executive.

He replaces Jon Sparkes, who will leave in November to become director of workforce development for NHS Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Hawkes, who is not disabled, will take up the role in mid-January.  

Before joining VSO, he was the founding director of Sense International, an international NGO supporting deafblind people.

"Over the past three years, Scope has undergone a significant transformation," he said. "I am looking forward to continuing the development of innovative services and influential campaigns that are led and shaped by the rights, needs and opinions of disabled people."
