The disability charity Scope has appointed Mark Atkinson, its interim chief executive, to the permanent role.

Atkinson, who joined the charity in October 2013 as director of external affairs, was appointed interim chief executive in June after the departure of Richard Hawkes.

Hawkes, who left in May amid a review of the charity’s direction, has since been appointed the first chief executive of the British Asian Trust, a charity founded by the Prince of Wales to support disadvantaged people in south Asia.

Scope announced yesterday that Atkinson, who has previously held senior roles at the Local Government Association, Citizens Advice and Ambitious about Autism, would take on the permanent role with immediate effect.

Andrew McDonald, chair of Scope, said the charity’s board had been impressed with Atkinson’s performance during his time at Scope, particularly since he became interim chief executive.

"I announced earlier in the summer that we had started to develop Scope’s future strategy," said McDonald. "Mark has led that work and is quite clearly the best person to lead us towards our vision of a society in which disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else."

Atkinson, who will be paid £129,000 a year, said it was a privilege to be appointed to the role.

"I’ve been part of the team for the past two years and have seen the impact of our work first-hand," he said.

"I’m looking forward to my new role as chief executive and ensuring that Scope continues to influence the agendas that matter most to disabled people, as well as providing services that allow disabled people to live the lives they choose."

Scope, which had an income of £101.1m in 2014/15, employs more than 3,000 people in the UK.
