Scottish Executive 'should fund village halls'

Charities in Scotland are urging the Scottish Executive to create a special fund for the renovation of village halls. The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations has set up an online petition calling on the Executive to provide financial support for halls.

The umbrella body says many halls, which house a range of community activities and often provide the setting for services run by other charities, are in the midst of a “slow-burning crisis”.

Without government help, the SCVO says, many halls will fall into disrepair and communities will be robbed of services such as childcare and support for older people, which are often run through halls.

“All of these things happen in halls and it’s these activities that will suffer,” Sandra Hogg, rural information officer at the SCVO, told Third Sector Online.

The SCVO is also calling on the Government to reduce the regulatory and bureaucratic burden on village halls.

So far the petition, which can be found on the Scottish Parliament website, has attracted 308 signatures. Liam McArthur, Liberal Democrat MSP for Orkney, has also lodged a motion at the Scottish Parliament to highlight the campaign.
