SCVO forges links with civil society

Scottish umbrella body in talks with faith groups and trade unions

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations is talking to churches and unions about developing stronger relationships and a more coherent ‘civil society' perspective on social issues.

Mark Ballard, communications manager at the SCVO, said the recession had led to renewed interest in the idea of civil society and the "progressive role to be played by the voluntary sector working in conjunction with faith groups, trade unions and others".

He said: "As part of this, the SCVO is in the process of bringing together some of the key players in Scottish civil society to explore how to develop stronger, more collaborative relationships. The talks are very exploratory at this stage and the upcoming discussions, chaired by our convenor Dr Alison Elliot, are just one of the steps we are taking along this road."
