Pancreatic Cancer UK provides support for people with pancreatic cancer and also undertakes campaigning and research.

Development

The charity decided to relaunch its website earlier this year. It put the contract out to tender in the spring and appointed the web design agency Baigent in May. The company's brief was to design and build a new site and develop a wider digital strategy. The new site, which went live in August, is built using the open source Umbraco content management system.

Design and content

The home page is uncluttered and the rotating main image adds dynamism. Visitors are greeted by three large tabs saying "I am here to find information and support", "I am here to fundraise" and "I am here about the study for survival" - these cater for the majority of inquiries. There are also drop-down menus at the top. The decision to use mainly white and the charity's colour of purple makes it easy on the eye.

Special features

Many charity websites are text-heavy; this one benefits from less text and more images. The discussion forums are better used than most, but overall the site is striking not for its originality but for its freshness and clarity. The site is welcoming and accessible but maintains a serious tone for such a serious illness. There is a lot of information about pancreatic cancer, but it doesn't overwhelm visitors.

"The site has been designed to convey both hope and support for all those affected and working with pancreatic cancer, giving clear calls to action and more easily accessible information."
