Site Visit: Tenovus

The Welsh charity designed a new website that was more patient-focused and user-friendly

Organisation: Tenovus
Agency: Precedent
Spend: £25,000-£30,000
Accessibility: W3C AA

The Welsh charity Tenovus offers support, advice and treatment for cancer patients, information on prevention and funding for research.

The charity wanted a new website that was not only more patient-focused and user-friendly, but could also be easily updated in-house. Lisa Evans, Tenovus's head of communications and marketing, wrote a brief after holding departmental consultation workshops. The design process took Precedent eight weeks from the point of commission.

Design and content

The colours - blue and orange - stand out while remaining within the brand hues. A stylised Flash animation running across the top of the site shows an orange bus travelling through a blue-outlined landscape, reflecting the charity's mobile cancer support unit, which takes cancer treatment into communities.

Special features

The 'Talk to us' section allows patients to contact an oncology nurse for advice. An e-commerce facility for donations and shopping recently allowed supporters to buy Christmas cards online for the first time, and the charity plans to expand its product range. The site is now integrated with the charity's e-marketing system, allowing people to sign up for newsletters and to social networking sites, such as Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

Tenovus says:

"Our new website is more interactive than the previous version and will bring our services directly to people living with cancer in a way that we haven't in the past."
