Sperm donation site comes in for criticism

A web campaign to recruit sperm donors launched by government-funded charity the National Gamete Donation Trust has run into controversy.

Representatives of parents in need of sperm donors say the website – which features a “toss-o-meter” and young women wearing ‘we want your sperm’ T-shirts – is offensive and reinforces stereotypes about sperm donors.

However, the trust has defended the campaign. It said it had already led to an increase in donor numbers, which have been declining for the past five years in the wake of concerns about donor anonymity.
