Sport Relief raises £3.4m in text donations

Event raises £31.6m in total and breaks its own record for donations made by mobile phone

This year's Sport Relief raised £3.4m from text message donations, the highest figure the event has ever raised in this way.

During the televised show last month, the event raised £31.6m in total, the most it has ever raised on the night. Last year's event raised £19.1m on the night and £28.5m in total.

This year Comic Relief, which runs Sport Relief, allowed supporters to donate £10 by text message, up from the previous maximum donation of £5. Viewers this year could choose to give £1, £5 or £10 through their mobiles.

Caroline Lien, operations director at Sport Relief, said: "Mobile has proved to be an extremely popular channel for us as it appeals to a wide audience demographic and enables an instant donation at various price points."
