The British Red Cross is in line for a £2m fundraising bonanza after being named Tesco Charity of the Year for 2007.

Announcing the partnership last week, Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said the two organisations would also establish a volunteering partnership.

He added that the partners were planning to hold a conference "to discuss how businesses such as Tesco can make a bigger and better contribution in communities and neighbourhoods".

Sir Terry announced the partnership, which will follow the company's current charity of the year deal with disability charity Whizz-Kidz next January, while unveiling Tesco's ten-point community plan.
