Two industrial charities to merge

Trustees of the Society of Chemical Industry and the Textile Institute have approved plans to merge.

The charities are now consulting internally before preparing a formal merger document. They hope the process will be completed by the end of the year.

Both organisations will retain their names and identities.

The society, which employs 44 staff and has 5,500 members, dates back to 1881. It works with businesses to bring science to the general public.

The institute, which has six staff and 2,500 members, facilitates learning in the textiles, clothing and footwear industries.

"Both have similar objectives, cultures and methods of sharing knowledge," said Andrew Ladds, chief executive of the society.
