US court set to rule in deaf kids' charity porn site dispute

The National Deaf Children's Society is hoping that a court decision this week will end its battle with a US porn web site.

The charity, which owns the web site www.ndcs.org.uk, found that the address www.ndcs.org led to a hardcore pornographic web site. The charity contacted the American owner of the domain name, asking that it be transferred.

Instead he offered to sell it to NDCS for $12,500, according to chief executive Susan Daniels.

In April, the NDCS won a victory against the site after taking its case to the World Intellectual Property Organisation dispute resolution panel in Geneva. But porn site owner Harold A. Meyer III has launched his own action in the US. The case is to be heard this week.

The WIPO panel found that Meyer had bought the domain name www.ndcs.org with the intention of making money out of the charity.

"Charities are extremely vulnerable to individuals and companies buying domain names ending in the .org suffix,

said Daniels.
