My Week: Dame Kelly Holmes

The busy sports star keeps pace with her charity

Monday: At 6am I receive a call from the trust's chief executive, Julie Whelan, to catch up with the latest developments. It's the only time we could both fit it in because we are both so busy. Partly it's because of the strategic review we are doing of the charity's activity - and partly it's because I have a lot on. I knew 2012 was going to be busy, but my days are nearly as demanding as when I was an athlete.

Tuesday: It was a late night at a sport awards event yesterday. It was worthwhile, though, because the organisation has its own foundation and does some great work. In the morning, I catch up with one of our trustees, Tracey Fletcher. We talk about the recent Acevo report on youth unemployment and I ask her to help us make the most of the findings in our support programmes for Neet young people (I hate that term).

Wednesday: I'm in the office today catching up on a few things. I call some of the young international athletes I mentor ahead of the UK Athletics trials later this month. That alone could be a full-time job. In the evening, I have a speaking engagement that makes it another late finish. But I'm hoping the company will be interested in partnering our programme for kids struggling to find work.

Thursday: I catch up with the team at our Get on Track programme and its expansion through the government's youth and community strategy. I am so chuffed that our work will form part of the Olympics legacy. Next, I have a pep talk with Beijing gold-winning sailor Pippa Wilson before a networking event she's hosting for the trust with The Economist.

Friday: I have a great meeting with Julie Whelan. We're working through the next stage of our strategic planning in time for our awayday at the end of the month. I don't think people realise how businesslike charities have to be these days. After that, it is back to my commercial work, preparing for another speaking event tonight. No rest for me.
