Westminster Council to mentor charities on health and safety

Westminster City Council has signed an agreement with the Charities Safety Group to provide its members with health and safety advice.

The CSG is an umbrella body that advises charities on health and safety. Under the agreement, health and safety questions that it is unable to answer will be passed on to the council, regardless of where the organisation with the query is based.

Dave Wildey, health and safety team leader at Westminster City Council, said the agreement would allow the CSG to give more consistent and authoritative advice on health and safety law.

He said the council, which has been appointed as the lead authority on charity health and safety issues, wanted to play its part in "a more strategic approach to enforcement in a sector that contrasts with the commercial environment we normally work in".

Rosalind Williams, chair of the CSG, said: "This agreement is useful for voluntary organisations, which, over the past 10 years, have had an increasing amount of health and safety-related responsibilities and legislation imposed on them."

For health and safety queries and advice, call the CSG on 07745 937567 or email csginfo@ncvo-vol.org.uk.
