Penny Brown says the move will cut core costs but there are no current plans for merger

Two infrastructure organisations in Yorkshire have decided to share a chief executive.

Penny Brown, chief executive of Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council has been appointed to lead East Riding Voluntary Action Services as well.

Brown said the two organisations, which provide support for other voluntary groups in the region, would look at other ways of sharing back-office functions over the next financial year.

She said a full merger was not currently planned but could be considered in future if appropriate.

Brown confirmed that Darren Willbourne, the previous chief executive of Ervas, left at the start of February to become self-employed, but would not say if he was made redundant.

The organisations already work together to provide services and plan to do so more in the future. For example, they might do joint work on brokering volunteering opportunities, said Brown.

She was unable to say how much money would be saved by sharing a chief executive but said the changes were primarily about improving services.

"The economic situation has encouraged organisations such as ours to see there is a double win here," she said. "We could cut some core costs and have a better focus on service delivery. It makes us more resilient for the future."
