More than £14m donated using Visa in UK's Giving Tuesday

Figures from the Charities Aid Foundation say this amounted to £10,000 a minute on the day, 3 December

More than £14m was donated to good causes using the Visa payment system in the UK on this year’s Giving Tuesday.

Figures published by the Charities Aid Foundation, which oversees the campaign in the UK, show that £10,000 a minute was paid to good causes through Visa payment platforms on this year’s Giving Tuesday, which was held on 3 December.

The figure was 48 per cent higher than the average amount donated through its system on a typical Tuesday, according to Visa.

The amount donated per minute has risen from £6,250 in 2015, the last time Visa provided comparable figures, a CAF spokesman said.

He said Visa had not supplied comparable figures for how much was raised for good causes through its payment platforms last year.

CAF said donations made globally on Giving Tuesday through the payment system PayPal were worth £81m, up from £75m last year.

More than 3,300 charities and businesses took part in Giving Tuesday in the UK, according to CAF.

The CAF spokesman said the organisation was unable to give an estimate on how much was raised for UK good causes on the day, partly because a lot of money would have been raised offline.

CAF said a bump in the number of  people signing up to payroll giving on the day would be worth an additional £180,000 to good causes over the next year.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge, which ran for a week from Giving Tuesday, raised more than £5.1m for good causes on the first day, up from £4.5m last year.

This year’s challenge went on to raise a record £15.6m for almost 600 UK charities.

Gráinne Mathews, Giving Tuesday lead in the UK at CAF, said the day "smashed the expectations" of CAF and its partners.

"CAF’s research has shown a worrying decline in the amount of people giving to charity, which makes Giving Tuesday so important in reminding everyone of the amazing work charities are doing and how we can help them," she said.

Giving Tuesday was launched in the US in 2012 in a bid to combat the materialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It was launched by CAF in the UK in 2014.
