£37.8m a record for Red Nose Day

Comic Relief narrowly beat its own record by raising £37.8m on Red Nose Day, up from £35.2m two years ago.

In 2003 the amount raised on the day surpassed the previous record by £12.5m and led to a final figure of £61m.

A spokeswoman said: "We are really pleased with the amount raised on the night. When you keep reaching such amazing figures, it's difficult to keep beating them. We're confident we are going to beat the final total for 2003."

Television coverage of the event featured the best of British comedy.

Elton John and George Michael both made guest appearances in Little Britain and there was a special edition of The Vicar of Dibley. Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman helped raise £1.3m when she beat EastEnders' Kim Medcalf in the Celebrity Fame Academy final.
