Looking for a new job this year? David Ryan, recruitment manager at Third Solutions, explains how to make the most of a recruitment agency to help you get the job you want.

We often get asked by candidates, why should I use an agency when looking for a role? If you’re wondering the same thing, here are five benefits of using an agency and how you can make the most of them

1. In-depth sector knowledge

Candidates benefit from the market knowledge of long-standing consultants who make it their job to understand the sector and stay abreast of the latest and future trends. Make sure you ask them questions about the sector that you want to know more about, such as what skills are in highest demand - they can pass on relevant aspects of their valuable knowledge to help you with your job search and career goals.

2. Skills-matching to get you the right job for you

Agencies can match candidates’ skills and experience with the right job, giving you a realistic idea of whether you are a competitive candidate, so you don’t have to waste your time applying for jobs that you’re unlikely to get. If the recruitment consultant doesn’t proactively offer you this insight, make sure you ask for it.

3. Strong relationships with industry employers

Any specialist agency worth its salt is committed to building solid relationships with industry employers. They meet with them face-to-face and get to know them. This means they will often hear about roles coming up in the near future that you wouldn’t otherwise know about. Due to these strong relationships, agencies are able to push candidates that they know will be a really good fit.

4. Insider knowledge of the charity

Not every candidate will be the right fit for every charity. And it may be difficult to know whether you are the right fit if you haven’t worked there before. Specialist agencies often have insider knowledge of charities, making them well placed to advise you on the organisation’s culture. You can also ask them questions you may not feel comfortable asking the employer directly. They can even give you insider tips such as the key strengths of your prospective colleagues and any skills gaps the employer is particularly keen on, so you can tailor your pitch accordingly.

5. In-depth 'get to know you' interviews with candidates

The best agencies really make an effort to get to know exactly what candidates want in terms of their next role. For example, at Third Solutions, we start off with an interview process where we talk to candidates about their career goals and personal values - this helps us establish their cultural fit to make sure we put them forward for roles they are likely to enjoy.

Before committing to a job, make the most of the industry knowledge and relationships that specialist recruitment agencies have built to ensure it’s the right fit for you.
