£6m in crime safety grants for community groups

Home Office Safer Homes Fund to help vulnerable people protect themselves from burglars

Community organisations throughout the UK will be able to apply for grants of up to £100,000 to improve safety in their local areas as part of a scheme launched this week by the Home Office.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced the new £6m Safer Homes Fund in association with local umbrella bodies Bassac, Community Matters and the Development Trusts Association - known collectively as the Community Alliance - to help the public protect themselves from burglars.

Three hundred grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 will be allocated to successful bidders to help to bring local people together and promote safety, particularly in areas of high crime.

Community anchors - organisations working to regenerate local areas - will be able to use the money for projects such as handy person schemes, where people carry out safety checks and install locks for elderly, disabled or vulnerable people in the community.

The fund is available for one year, and organisations will be able to apply to the Home Office for individual grants. Further details on how to apply will be available towards the end of April, and grants will become available from May.
