ACEVO urges local councils to follow Treasury's review

The recommendations from the Treasury's cross-cutting review should not be ignored by local authorities in the same way that the Government's compact with the voluntary sector was, ACEVO said this week.

Stephen Bubb, chief executive at the voluntary-sector body, has written to Sir Jeremy Beecham, chairman of the Local Government Association, requesting an urgent meeting to discuss how to ensure that the recommendations are implemented.

"The Compact was considered a wonderful idea and everyone agreed with it,

said a spokeswoman at ACEVO. "Local compacts were written but there has been nothing since - it is all sat on a shelf somewhere."

The Government is appointing senior civil servants in each department to ensure that the recommendations are driven through. However, the spokeswoman added: "They need to find a way for the message to go down to local level.
