What are the bloggers doing?

The campaign will centre on a visit to impoverished communities in Brazil by three bloggers, drawn from youth-focused music, women’s and lifestyle communities. The bloggers will be visiting two ActionAid-funded projects during the carnival season. They flew out on 2 March.

What prompted the charity to do this?

The move is based on research carried the charity last year that showed young people feel disengaged from discussions on equality - they feel that although it applies to them, they are powerless to do anything about it.

Those surveyed felt in particular that they couldn’t help those in the developing world, where they perceive the issues to be more pressing. They are also tired of hearing about these issues from celebrities - an insight that informed the decision to use social media to help spread the message through peer-to-peer networks, rather than traditional journalists or celebrities.

Which projects will they visit?

The first, Redes is a community-based initiative in the Mare favella, which provides social support and education for young people. Gada, the second project, is based in Santarem and is a youth group that provides advice on sexual health.

Soul Culture's Marsha Gosho Oakes, Shan Phearon from Pinboard Blog and Hannah Mudge, a writer from Bitch Buzz.

Is there any external help?

The social media agency We Are Social is providing support for the campaign.

Third Sector verdict:

Rio de Janeiro will be a stimulating environment for the bloggers to learn about gender inequality, and young people are bound to be interested. The best thing about the campaign is that people can follow the writers’ adventures. Traditional methods of getting young people involved with social issues are not working, and this campaign is an exciting and creative solution.
