Age Concern hosts conference on gay and lesbian issues

Age Concern is to host the first national conference that addresses the specific needs of older lesbians and gay men.

The conference, which will include speakers, workshops, a soap-box session and an exhibition, follows the charity's publication of a resource pack on working with older gay people.

Gordon Lishman, Age Concern England's director-general, said: "Age Concern does not claim to be an expert in this field but this conference is a chance to listen to the problems and concerns of older lesbians and gay men.

"We hope that this will impact on the work that we do as a charity as well as encourage other organisations and policy makers to create equal treatment."

Stonewall's executive director Angela Mason described the event as "a major milestone".

She added: "I hope that this conference will also be the beginning of a new coalition between the older community and the gay community."
